Download Membership Form -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Practice Rules All skaters are required to follow these rules, as well as any rules from each rink. No chewing gum at any time Every skater must wear an ANSI certified helmet that fits properly. Helmets must be on and buckled BEFORE you step on the skating surface. All skaters are EXPECTED to participate in the entire practice session and give their best effort unless the coach excuses him or her. NO PROFANITY! Skaters are to demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times. No criticism of any skater at any time. Wear comfortable, form-fitting clothes to practice such as uniforms or spandex shorts with tucked in T-shirts. All skaters should have the appropriate wheels on when they arrive at practice. Skaters should not miss drills due to wheel changes. Skaters are expected to be on the skating surface within 10 minutes of the start of the practice session. When the coach is talking, no one else should be. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sportsmanship Checklist As a member of this team, you agree to abide by the following I abide by the practice rules. I try to avoid arguments. I always skate fair. I follow the directions of the coach. I respect the other skater's efforts. I accept the judgment calls of the referees and coaches. I help the coach and other skaters whenever I can. I never "rub it in", or gloat when I beat another skater. I don't complain or make excuses when I lose. I treat my teammates, opponents, coaches and referees with respect. If a teammate makes a mistake, I encourage, not criticize. I try to learn from my mistakes and continue to skate my best. Good sportsmanship means having the ability to win without gloating, lose without complaining, and showing respect to others at all times -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tips for skater Parents During practice sessions, keep a low profile. Let the coach do the coaching and just enjoy watching your child develop. Observe and evaluate, but avoid being overbearing. If you are a parent who is also a skater, the same applies…let the coach do the coaching. Communicate with your skater privately and positively. Be a good Role model. Don't swear, or in other ways show poor sportsmanship. Let your behavior serve as an example. Redefine winning and losing. Place a priority on effort and reaching maximum potential as individuals and as a team. See opponents as comrades, not enemies. Emphasize competing against yourself; opponents are there just to help you do this. Encourage cooperation. Push teamwork; discourage selfishness, set up situations where different sexes/races of children depend on each other for success. Keep sports in perspective. Nurture well-rounded identity for kids; support their sport and nonsport interests equally, as this fosters an identity as a total person, not just an athlete. Be positive whenever possible. Critical comments can hurt more than help; give a compliment first, then add what they can do to improve, followed by why doing this will help them. All kids are not created equally. Differences among kids require different ways of treating them. Appreciate their individual strengths and help them develop at their own pace. Avoid "labeling" kids. They tend to behave and perform within the limits you set for them; expecting each of them to succeed in their own way gives them the freedom to do so. Don't confuse hearing with listening. Listen to their needs and concerns; their worries may seem trivial at times, but let them know you understand and support them. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- F.A.Q.s Can anyone join? In order to join the speed team a skater must be able to perform basic skating techniques wearing inline skates such as forward skating, stopping and cross-overs. It is not necessary for a skater to own a pair of speed skates before he/she starts. It is necessary however to have access to a pair of recreational roller blades… speed skates if possible. A person does not have to be "fast" in order to join… we'll help you get fast! Each skater and parent must sign a written agreement to follow Team Florida's practice and competition rules. Beginner classes are offered throughout the year, and encouraged for new skaters. The skate shop offers inexpensive speed skater starter kits that include full set up skates, and a helmet. What equipment will I need? Each skater must have inline speed skates or roller blades and a safety helmet (ANSI Certified) before they can practice. Skaters should wear a speed uniform (skin suit), or shorts if they have them. If you do not have a speed uniform (skin suit), bicycle-type shorts or loose gym shorts and t-shirt are acceptable. Performance Inline Racing Uniforms Team uniforms are required to compete at meets. The cost of the uniforms is $65.00 (price subject to change). When you join the team, we will make arrangements to get uniforms ordered for you. Do I have to compete if I join? No. Speed skating is a great way to get in shape or to lose weight. Did you know speed skating burns more than 600 calories per hour? While most of our skaters intend on competing, it is not required. When do we practice? Practice schedules change from time to time based on upcoming race schedules, the rink's schedule and season. You can review the current practice schedule on the team web site: www.performanceinlineracing.org . Any changes to the schedule are communicated during our practices and posted on this site. What if we want to practice more? Some skaters may want to practice more than what time we have allotted… great! There are many team members who practice more than three times a week. The coach can direct you to other team members who practice outside this schedules… you are welcome to practice with them. What's expected at practice? Parents: Please let the coach's coach! All parents want their child to succeed. We also want to see your child succeed… as a team member and an individual skater. Parents must be able to respect the coach's authority over the practices and events. Coaches will not tolerate situations in which adults react inappropriate, senseless and even violent ways at any of our sporting events. Parents who demonstrate such behavior will be asked to leave and escorted out if necessary. Every parent wants to see his or her child become the next "champion." We do not want our practices to become more about adult egos than kid's enjoyment and participation. Even at the National level, parents need to be able to control themselves and work with the coaches. Skaters: RESPECT… All skaters should respect their teammates, their coaches, coaches and athletes from other teams, the officials who are refereeing the events and spectators and parents. Skaters who demonstrate disrespect will be tolerated, and may face a suspension from the team practices or events. Extreme cases of disrespect or inappropriate behavior may result in a skater being expelled from the team. Inappropriate behavior during an event may cause the skater to be suspended from that event without refund of meet fees. Viewing this page requires a browser capable of displaying frames.
